Many thanks to Daphne Dragona and Panos Dragonas for creating such an inspiring dialogue among artists and architects, past and future.

οἶνος / οἶκος 

The notion of home (οἶκος), for a migrant, but not only,  is often associated with loss. For a Greek  it is unthinkable to recreate the exact taste of a food or drink, when away from home. It is never the same. One’s mother’s recipe is always the one and only way of constructing a taste. My mother does not like cooking, but when she cooks it is unique. And then it is worth combining this food with a glass of Greek wine (οἶνος). Mymother does not make wine, but her network of friends and experts can suggest to her the best kinds, each time. Wine is known since Ancient Greece, but in Greece nowadays it is still a luxurious product. After my mother lost her second parent, her mother, the feeling of loss had been unbearable for her. She then shared a prose, which I believe is biographical. It is about herself carrying to home a bottle of wine for the family. But the bottle breaks and the valuable good is now lost. The prose is called The Miraculous Substance. It is written by Maria Toloudi, whom I want to celebrate today, and everyday.

About: 

An experiment between nature and technology, this cyborg hanging garden allows plants and artificial lights to co­exist and co­evolve based on people's movements. As visitors approach the installation, the light spectrum changes to enrich the energy provided to the plants' roots and to enliven the garage’s dark space. The installation makes viewers aware of the diversity of light we encounter in life: the lack of light, homogenous light in interior spaces, and over­lighted spaces. 

Curator's statement (Jutta Friedrichs): 

As one walks closer to the Cyborg Garden by Zenovia Toloudi, the plants, one by one subtly light up. Like signals transmitted from underneath the pavement, feeding a constant stream of information into homes and workspaces, each plant is fed with light via an individual fiber optic cable welling up from an artificial source. The glowing tips illuminate unnoticed details of the plants and their roots, normally hidden. The sterile rows of cylindrical water vessels reminds one of a laboratory setting or specimen jars displayed in a natural history museum, preserving extinct or endangered organisms. The plants seem in danger; detached from their natural environment, they have become dependent on human care. The visitor’s proximity activates the life support mechanism, and light travels through the cables like nutrients through an IV drip, feeding the plants their essentials for survival. All twenty plants are connected to a central light and sensor network weaving together nature, technology and human spectators into one interdependent system.

ILLUMINUS is a nighttime contemporary art event established in Boston’s SoWa Arts District in 2014 and taking place this year on Lansdowne Street. ILLUMINUS features installations and performances by artists who manipulate light, sound, and projection to create an immersive, multi-sensory spectacle. Locally-organized, ILLUMINUS is Boston’s contribution to the global “nuit blanche” movement established in Paris and taking place in cities around the world. Last year, ILLUMINUS attracted a crowd of over 10,000.

Hiroshi SUGIMOTO

The architectures seen in Hiroshi Sugimoto's work are originally masculine monuments that possessed concrete forms. The solid buildings had taken shape through the creativity of builders and architects with the aim of showing the power and wealth that maintain civilisation. However Sugimoto excludes the solid materiality of well-known buildings, and shows an aggregate of shadows which is similar to seeing a fleeing nightmare. Through the lenses of his camera, Sugimoto's nihilistic view succeeds an infusing poison into the glorious products of modernism, and in abstracting their illusory appearances and reversing their values. His architectural photography also achieves to exquisitely deny the materialistic nature possessed by objects.

An Art performance by Gordon Matta-Clark entitled "Tree Dance" (1971) put to "Miss Balaton" by Venetian Snares. "For the exhibition Twenty-Six by Twenty Six at the Vassar College of Art Gallery in Poughkeepsie, New York, Matta-Clark created a performance inspired by spring fertility rituals.
