Tomorrow's Talks (en)

Speculations, stories, fictions: What role can they play in a contradictory era when they become part of architectural and artistic projects? How can they engage with elusive phenomena, such as climate change, or the rapid development and use of artificial intelligence? To which degree can they provoke change?

As part of the Tomorrows exhibition, Onassis Cultural Centre organises an afternoon of talks on current practices and methodologies that use speculation to explore near or distant futures. Participants from the exhibition are invited to present their approaches and the ways in which they respond to users’ and inhabitants’ worries and expectations. Through these approaches, speculations about the future role of architecture and design also occur; going beyond their common functionality, they are redefined as they focus on fictional scenarios, and aim to evoke discussions about the relationship of the human with nature and the machine. Distinct examples offer the opportunity for critical reflections on possible as well as desirable futures.

"In Event-Cities 3, Bernard Tschumi explores the complex and productive triangulation of architectural concept, context, and content. There is no architecture without a concept, an overriding idea that gives coherence and identity to a building. But there is also no architecture without context—historical, geographical, cultural—or content (what happens inside). Concept, context, and content may be in unison or purposely discordant. Against the contextualist movement of the 1980s and 1990s, which called for architecture to blend in with its surroundings, Tschumi argues that buildings may or may not conform to their settings—but that the decision should always be strategic." communal lighting installation from donated fixtures 
by beforelightlocated in the heart of athens, a small street within the monastiraki area is host to a lighting installation. by inviting users to donate their old luminaires, fixtures and lamp shades in order to transform the abandoned street of central athens into a homely space.

an abandoned shop was temporarily transformed into an open workspace for people to gather, observe and participate in the development of the project. a process of repairing, testing and waterproofing the lamps engaged volunteers that, in collaboration with greek creative studio beforelight, prepared more then 150 lamps to create a colorful ceiling over the street.

limanakia

Few kilometers outside Athens, opposite the lake Vouliagmeni one can find 3 little bays, named "limanakia"/ λιμανάκια (=little bays/ ports). I visited the 2nd one, which also includes a bar. It is one of my favorite beaches in Athens. What is amazing in this beach is first of all the rock formations around the water, making it an excellent place for those who like to jump into the water. The wilderness of the landscape attracts young people or at least people that do not need a lot of luxury and they enjoy the basics. Architecturally, the interventions made in the landscape are remarkable. The "beach" is composed by a series of wooden decks attached to the rocks in various heights looking at the bay. The bar/ cantine is very basic and also has a wooden deck with simple tables/ benches right at the edge of the water. As I was browsing to find images for this post I realized that the waters in limanakia is offered for divers. In the same search I also discovered that Alexandros Papadiamantis has written "Ta limanakia" in 1907. However this seems to be for a different area.

THAT'S LIFE

It was October 2011, almost 2 years ago, when our group, having already staged Penticoste by David Edgar and Plutos by Aristofanis, decided to turn to our inner selves (which already have an unbreakable bond with the society and the hard reality of present Greece) and to stage a performance based on our own experiences. In order to achieve that, we all opened up our souls, unravelling our paths in life, our personal experiences, our memories and the feelings we all carry inside. Stories locked deep inside us, well hidden, and at the same time waiting to be expressed at the right moment, with the right people and the fitting personal and group support. Stories that could be told by anyone, in any language, from whichever part of the world their narrator may have come.

When we completed our personal journey of inner quest and self-exposure, we decided to create a staged composition of the stories that were written in Greek (sometimes with a little help) from our group. That’s how our third performance, That’s Life, came to life. Its central themes are human relationships, conflicts in the workplace, fears, dreams, memories, regrets, social conditions, disappointment, sadness, happiness, love and death… Stories that have marked our lives and souls. Stories that confirm the idea that whenever we are, whoever we are, the small and the big moments of our lives have the same value.
The performance of our play That’s Life will premiere on Saturday the 22nd of June and will continue until the 2nd of July (except for Wednesday the 26th of June) in an old house at Avdi square (Giatrakou 2), at Metaksourgio, full of images of time passing by. One fundamental principle of our group is that theater should be accessible to everyone, no matter where you come from and whatever your economic status, and that’s why the entrance is free.
