so, if we design it, can you program it?
here the design is amazing/difficult, the engineering behind that is simple, a few neon-lamps, a simple low cost digital circuit for the clock etc..
In some countries there are technical universities with faculties: "Industrial design" or "Industrial design and management". There you learn how to design something that can be implemented (from engineering point of view).
For example in Greece we don't have engineers that studies industrial design. I suppose in USA/etc there are many engineers like that, and this is the reason that you find such designs.
