green boulevards

inspired by urbanlab's proposal for the city of the future, i found the next couple of images of a model of an old competition about orestiada in greece.
for those that do not know orestiada- a small city at the most northeastern part of greece, maybe its important to mention that the climate can become very unpleasant especially in the summer where all the asphalt and pavement can become really hot.
the competition brief required to redesign the square and a main street of orestiada.
the concept was simple: to create a green carpet [green-scape nowadays] expanding from the square to the streets to cause alterations to the micro climate of that area. emphasis was given to the design of the green boulevards where they were designed to host various activities. i can remember every square foot of new orestiada's carpet:

this competition was done by gtroza and bee-zee.

a!not to forget the vertical landscapes proposal from west8 for new york.
the depth [vs surface] can be very critical while designing green boulevards.

cities without history could be interesting as well. but you are right orestiada is all about couple of (white) buildings.

i never think of cities when i am thinking of evros. for me its more about the landscape. accessibility to nature and wide views. i can feel free, although it sounds cliche ;]
the other thing that is kind of amazing is the fact that you live on the borderline.
