Καλως σας βρηκα. Architecture can be so uplifting sometimes...
Standing in front or inside a building that fills you with awe is a proof of the proximity of humans to the divine (whatever that is)

ica: i dont know about the contribution of the photographer to the already amazing worksite. there is definetely an interesting atmosphere in these photos, something more intriguing probably than the final building... they are defenitely connected with cities we know through movies, animations and comics. we want to be small and explore a new world!

identity cafe: your comment contributes to my motivation towards built architecture especially because it is coming from a mouth of a doctor and goalkeeper [are you goalkeeper indeed?].
it also brings me in mind a small argument i had recently with a friend who was criticizing the building-church of rafael moneo in los angeles that i posted some weeks ago, keeping people away from the divine-what ever that is[your words]or the metaphysical aspect of life[his words]. your comment makes my opinion more clear by insisting that architecture- through its artistic and spatial role- can definetely do that.
the building-church i am refering to:
cathedral of our lady of angels
now that i am looking it close to the stadium though...i think architecture can do more and more!!! ;]

very true about the movie connection: i would mostly think to some european production rather then an american one. I am thinking about Nirvana of Salvatores. still wanting to walk in it...as you say!
I personally believe that H&M are among the top 10 contemporary architects: no surprise if they get involved in some kind of cinematic experience! that would be cool to see. tell us more about these pics!

I couldn t stop smiling! "Are you a goalkeeper indeed?" This was very sweet! Probably you dont remember (it was addressed to boys anyway) the comic book in the 80s...with the same title :):)
I think architects are vey close to doctors though. Their(your) work has a big impact to human health (mental health)! An architect's creation can have such a profound impact on human psyche and it can influence drastically the perception of self and our surroundings.
It can contribute to happiness as well as to depression! (by the way what were the architects of the 70s thinking? did they all have some severe form of dementia?)
ciao

unfortunately i have not seen this movie... and many others... unlike someone i know that watched 135 this year!
H+deM maybe among 3 toppest?
i think they are interested in films. the last exhibition of them i saw in MoMA, it was full of movies... not their own movies... but still. i have an earlier post about it.
identitycafe:
i smiled as well when i read your comment!!!
i dont know this comic book, but i want to know.
i like the way you talk about architects' role. it would be great if poeple could awknoledge our work the way you do!!!
and pay architects they way they pay doctors!!! ;]
unfortunately in greece architects are not so important...
naturally a suoer-negative person, the last thing i want to do in this blog is to complain!!!!!! so i believe in the power of the small/ few that can make a big impact for the whole!
i am wondering to which architects of 70's are you referring at?

you can get paid good as an architect in Greece, at least in the two biggest cities, if you simply Ask for it. Most architects in greece do not go higher in a bid than the lower possible amount the law dictates: that amount is still stuck in 1989 prices. Hopefully, from Feb 2007,that is going to change and the lowest fees are going to at least double for all engineers in Greece. :)

@identitycafe: our role has a big impact in peoples' health, physical and mental. eg: there are some dimensions for stairways that can really kill a person when he ascends or descends !

@Zenovia: architects were not important yes, but things change, day by day I think :)

oh...and I forgot why I came here to comment : the building reminds me of Toy Ito 's TODS gallery in omotesando tokyo :
http://www.arcspace.com/architects/ito/tod/tod.html

http://architettura.supereva.com/architetture/20050109/

what clicked in my mind was the interweaving of branches on the building envelope, in H&M in a "spherical" pattern, in Toyo Ito in a L shaped building :)

yes, all these buildings are becoming more and more similar, due to structure being at the surface. i guess the serpentine pavilion from ito is also in the same category.
arup is beyond many of these innovative structures [not the tod's one].
in my next post [fyi*] toyo talks about herzog. in this text of a+u is apparent that ito admires the earlier work of herzog and he waits to see how they will continue with their new direction.
anyhow, there is a great influence between these great architects.

regarding the payments:
i am not so sure things are they way you describe but i really do hope you are right!!!
i personally believe and practice "Ask for it" but it does not work always.

what the standards would be starting feb 2007?

@zenovia: in Feb 2007 the technical chamber of Greece will reevaluate the minimum construction cost for a building, upon which the fees for an architectural or engineering study are based. Now the construction cost upon which fees are based is a conventional one , ie : not realistic -- 150 -200 E per square meter... from feb and on, the tables with the materials , labor and so on are going to be recalculated and based upon the real cost of the building: ie from 600E per s.m onwards.

That means that for a house of lets say 100 sm on which now you got paid a low 2000E with taxes and expenses (that means that at the end , what you got as an architect on pure profit was s/th like 1200E ) in Feb 2007 you will get 6000E at the minimum. I am not sure for the exact amounts but the scale of the raise is correct , ie doubled or tripled fees. The even better part : from now on , fees will be based on the real construction costs, and will raise or drop according to the cost of building. :)
