Well, the only building of Mies that I have seen is the New National Gallery in Berlin which is really impressive, especially because of the stone abutment and the space that creates around it in the city. The Dirksen Building looks really boring in my opinion, especially in view of the recurrence of the same Miesian typology. Somehow real-estate Mies :-)
euxaristw gia to comment !,

definetely there is a boring aspect in the repetition of mies's buildings.
you can also experieence that in the iit campus sometimes.
but there is a quality on it, especially in the context of chicago downtown.
even wikipedia mentions the real-estate aspect- i think it says fast-track construction-of that period!!!
and as i said in a previous post mies needed to built!
[i appreciate the use of the word boring =]]
He uses here a "trick" that he started using in Lake shore drive apartments in Los Angeles, the I shaped beams glued to the facade. While turing Berlin for our diploma in 2001-2002, we visited an exhibition dedicated to Mies, in the Berlin design museum . In one of the interviews of the man himself that we had the chanceto see was the rational behind the I beams on the facade: He specifically refered to them as "decoration" , which purpose was not other than amplifying the verticallity of the skyscraper. We were shocked to hear Mies utter the words "decoration" specifically for such a signature item of skyscrpaer architecture. He considered the building "boring" without them.
So essentially,if we could generalize a little bit from the episode : Modern masters were not strict I think in their "form follows function" mantra, since they were trying to provide to the rest of us not only with a new architecture but also with a new aesthetics, which now may seem boring and ....old . Nonetheless you can see the new aestetic mantra vibrating through every new building produced nowadays....or not ?
Are the Lake shore drive apartments in Los Angeles anything like the Ocean shore drive apartments in Chicago?
cp ^
wellcome cp!!!: i guess mave was confused and wrote los angeles instead of chicago. all live in chicago know the lsd appartments! but its not big deal if you are so far away like greece!
mave loves los angeles and thinks everything is there! ;]
but thanks for responding while i was working!!! ;]
mave: its interesting to hear about this word coming from mies's mouth! i knew the beam was not structural but i would not dare to name it decoration.
i would like to investigate this issue more before further analyzing it now. i am reading some interesting stuff these days...
Oops !!!! F*** , I blew it did n't I? Yes , They are in chicago of course !!! I would not call the beams decoration either..but coming from the horse's mouth ...:)
But why would we not call it decoration ? Becuase it is not decoration or maybe because we are conditioned not to put the words decoration and mies van der rohe in the same sentence ....
ps: I have to start studing about american cities other than los angeles!!!
its ok, dont worry!
you can start studying chicago first!
